Nostromo: A Tale of the Seaboard

Joseph Conrad

"The political atmosphere of the Republic was generally stormy in these days. The fugitive patriots of the defeated party had the knack of turning up again on the coast with half a steamer's load of small arms and ammunition."

Separatism, militias, foreign opportunists and corruption converge in an imaginary South American country. Conrad describes a complex, morally ambiguous world that is more similar than different to today's struggles in resource-rich emerging countries.
